Q&A WITH MYCHAELA

1. Please give a brief description of your business and services provided.

We sell imported children's and babies' fashions and toys from japan, and we also produce and sell our own private label collection that's made here in L.A.

2. How did you get started?

I started making paper mockeries of things like books and wallets and tickets when I was old enough to use scissors. I started designing my own clothes and sewing when I was 13. I started travelling to southeast Asia and importing clothing and textiles when I was 19. Then e-commerce immediately followed, with a lot of self taught web design and photoshop and so on. I always loved Japanese fashion, so when my son Mylo was born in 2008, I started buying his baby clothes from Japan. I soon began importing them on a grander scale when I realized no one else was doing it.

3. Why is Downtown LA, Little Tokyo, and the Arts District community important to you?

Little Tokyo is the one place in L.A. where I feel like I know a lot of people and I have spent the last 5 years working in or near to it. It's my home in L.A. I love Little Tokyo because people here are always in a good mood and happy to be here. It's a happy place, and I love to see it thriving.

4. As an entrepreneur / business owner, what advice can you give for success to our entrepreneurs?

Keep Little Tokyo unique. Offer products or services that are hard to come by in other parts of Los Angeles - that will keep locals and tourists alike interested in coming here.

5. Name one thing interesting / quirky about you and/or your business.

My style and aesthetic taste is pretty quirky according to most and I've based my entire brand image around that - selling what I think is cute or cool for babies and kids. But people haven't seen it curated in a shop before. It's been funny the reactions I've heard to the kewpie dolls in the front window - that they're scary, freaky, disturbing, or whatever - they're just old fashioned dolls with big heads!
